(GS) CEO David Solomon reportedly warned on Friday that the U.S. economy could face “shocks” if the deficit is not brought under control and growth does not pick up.During an interview with CNBC, Solomon said that, given the United States' and the U.S. dollar's importance to the global economic ecosystem, the country has more latitude than others to run deficits. However, he said it still needs to ensure deficits are eventually brought under control.“I do believe if we don’t get it [deficit] under control and don’t get our growth rate up, there will be a moment of time when we have speed bumps or shocks or things that force us to readjust our behavior,” Solomon added in the interview.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Solomon Points To The Only Way To Beat The Deficit Problem</h2>The Goldman Sachs CEO said that the only solution to the deficit problem right now is for the U.S. economy to run at a higher rate of growth than it has been running at until now.“I think we’re in a position now where we have a chance for the next couple of years to run at a higher base growth rate,” he added. Solomon listed the deregulation drive, a surge in capital expenditure, and the fiscal stimulus as the factors driving growth going forward.When asked why the bond markets are not “agitated,” Solomon said they’ve been benign because there aren't many great alternatives to the U.S. economy and the dollar.The Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday projected the deficit to be $1.9 trillion for fiscal year 2026, equal to 5.8% of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). The CBO expects the deficit to soar to $3.1 trillion by 2036, accounting for 6.7% of the GDP. This is higher than the 50-year average of 3.8%, the CBO stated in its report.However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said during a separate interview with CNBC that he does not know what the CBO is thinking, following the release of its latest deficit projections.“The CBO missed what went on in the last year, so if they can’t do the near year, how can they do 10 years out?” he said in the interview.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bessent Optimistic About Economy In 2026</h2>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism about the U.S. economy this year, saying that while “2025 was about setting the table, 2026 is going to be a banquet for the American people.”Bessent added that, unlike in financial markets, there is a lead time required to set up infrastructure, such as factories. Citing the rise in construction jobs and commitments to build factories, the Treasury Secretary stated in the interview that he expects a “lot of factory completions” in 2026.Bessent also said that the bond markets have been tame because the U.S. government is getting its fiscal house in order.Meanwhile, U.S. equities gained in Friday’s opening trade. This was in line with a Dow Jones estimate, according to&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/economy-politics/calendar">MarketWatch</a> data.On an annual basis, core CPI stood at 2.5%, in line with expectations. The headline and core inflation are still above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target of 2%.Following the release of the CPI report, the benchmark 10-Year Treasury yield fell four basis points to 4.062%, while the 30-year yield declined three basis points to 4.699%. The 2-year Treasury yield declined five basis points to hover at 3.416% at the time of writing.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Food, Shelter Costs Rise, Energy Costs Decline</h2>Food costs rose 0.2% in January, according to the BLS report, with five of the six major grocery store food group indexes registering increases during the month. The shelter index and the index for rent rose 0.2% in January, according to the BLS.The report stated that the index for energy decreased 1.5% in January, while the gasoline index fell 3.2%.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Recreation Costs, Airfares Jump</h2>Recreation costs rose 0.5% in January, while airfare costs soared 6.5% over the month.The index for communication rose 0.5% during the month, and the index for apparel increased 0.3%. The new vehicles index rose 0.1% in January.Following the release of the CPI report, the odds of a 25-basis-point rate cut in June edged up slightly to 49.7%, according to the CME FedWatch&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, up from 48.9% a day ago.&nbsp;However, the odds of a 25 bps cut in March remain low, at 9.8%.Meanwhile, U.S. equities were mixed in Friday’s opening trade. <ul class="summary-bullets"><li>January inflation has a history of running hotter, a pattern the Boston Fed says markets and policymakers are closely monitoring.</li><li>The Boston Fed noted that residual seasonality and more frequent price resets in January can distort inflation data, potentially pushing readings higher.</li><li>Sectors that typically reprice at the start of the year tend to show elevated inflation, amplifying the January effect, it added.</li></ul>U.S. consumer prices could spring a surprise, and the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January could come in hotter than expected, warned market experts ahead of the release of the inflation report later on Friday.Wall Street analysts expect both the headline and the core CPI to rise 0.3% in January, according to&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/economy-politics/calendar">MarketWatch</a> data. On an annual basis, both core and headline growth are forecast at 2.5%.“There's a chance CPI could be hotter than expected, a trend in recent Januarys. This could be a seasonal effect that statisticians need to iron out, but investors should be aware of the possibility,” stated analysts at Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR), in their latest note.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Devil In The Details</h2>The firm noted that the possibility of a surprisingly strong inflation might be discounted to some extent. Cooper Howard, director of fixed income research and strategy at SCFR, noted that there are two extreme narratives in the market currently – one that inflation is too hot, and the other that it is too cold.“While the headline is important, the devil will be in the details,” Howard said.The CPI report comes amid a broader market sell-off, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing nearly 670 points lower on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 index closed 1.6% lower, while the Nasdaq Composite declined more than 2%.Mohamed El-Erian, Chief Economic Advisor at Allianz, pointed out in a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/elerianm/status/2021991943429849391">post</a> on X that inflation will enter its sixth year of being persistently above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target of 2%.“What is virtually guaranteed is that these first 2026 inflation numbers will be part of a bigger set of data confirming that the US is in its sixth consecutive year of inflation running above the Federal Reserve’s target. This includes residual seasonality, more often a price change in January, and higher inflation in sectors that see price changes at the start of the year.“The behavior of January inflation is especially relevant now as markets and policymakers remain watchful for changes to underlying inflation,” the Boston Fed said in its latest note.However, analysts at ING Think note that Friday’s U.S. CPI report is likely to have a smaller market impact than Wednesday’s payrolls.“The Federal Reserve has been signalling little urgency to cut again, and it’s mostly the jobs market that can move the needle,” the firm said.ING Think analysts don’t expect a surprise in the CPI report, which they say aligns with the recent hawkish reprisal in Fed expectations.Meanwhile, U.S. equities declined in Friday’s pre-market trade. U.S. consumer prices could spring a surprise, and the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January could come in hotter than expected, warned market experts ahead of the release of the inflation report later on Friday.

Wall Street analysts expect the headline and core CPI to rise 0.3% in January.

Democrats on Thursday blocked a Republican-backed measure to secure votes to fund the Department of Homeland Security beyond the Feb. 13 midnight deadline.

While it was low at the beginning of 2025, coming in at 2.6%, the rate jumped in April and May by 125 percentage points, when Trump imposed tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% before lowering them back to 113%. By the end of the year, the average tariff rate was 13%, the report noted.Illustrating through an example, the report said that if a foreign seller charges $100 for a product and a 25% tariff is imposed, the tax adds $25, raising the total cost to $125 if the exporter doesn’t lower the price.“In this case, the tariff incidence falls entirely on the importer; in other words, there is 100 percent pass-through from tariffs to import prices, and therefore on U.S. consumers and firms,” the report said.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Analysis Rationale</h2>The report drew on evidence from Trump’s first term, noting that foreign exporters did not cut prices in response to tariffs. As a result, the full burden fell on the U.S., with tariffs fully passed through to import prices.It estimated that for 2025, Americans absorbed 94% of tariff costs from January to August, easing to 92% in September and October, and 86% in November.With the average tariff at 13% in December, the report suggested that import prices on affected goods rose about 11%. Americans Bear The Brunt Of Trump’s Tariffs, As Per NY Fed Report

Jobless Claims Come In Slightly Higher Than Expectations, Continuing Claims Rise

According to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday, jobless claims fell by 5,000 to 227,000 in the week ended February 7.
