Ethereum is a global, open-source platform for decentralized applications. In other words, it is a decentralized blockchain platform that enables developers to build and deploy smart contracts and applications without central authority control. Unlike Bitcoin, which primarily functions as digital currency, Ethereum operates as a programmable global computer where developers can create any type of decentralized service.   The platform hosts over $14 billion in DeFi applications with hundreds of thousands of active users across financial protocols, NFT marketplaces, and gaming platforms. Its transition to Proof of Stake in September 2022 reduced energy consumption by over 99%, addressing environmental concerns while strengthening network security.  The network operates through thousands of independent validator nodes that process transactions and execute smart contracts on the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. The project traces its origins back to 2004 with Ryan Fugger before being co-founded in its modern form by Jed McCaleb and Chris Larsen. The company, now known as Ripple, works with major financial institutions as partners and investors to build global payment solutions. To protect the network from spam, a small amount of XRP is burned during every transaction, and the token is further utilized by institutions as collateral to access traditional markets and manage digital asset infrastructure.  Institutional adoption of the asset reached a major milestone in November 2025 when the SEC approved the first wave of spot XRP ETFs. These products, offered by major issuers including Bitwise, Grayscale, 21Shares, Canary Capital, and Franklin Templeton, are now listed on prominent exchanges like the NYSE Arca, Nasdaq, and Cboe BZX. While Ripple remains a key contributor to the ecosystem, the underlying XRP Ledger continues to operate as an open-source and decentralized network.

Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>These companies might buy out Rivian to expand their presence in both electric vehicles and full vehicle autonomy, the fund manager said.&nbsp;</li><li>Rivian stands “huge” potential of expanding its total addressable market with its upcoming R2 midsize SUV, as per Black.&nbsp;</li><li>Black’s comments come on the heels of the company announcing a partnership with Uber Technologies earlier on Thursday.</li></ul><p>The Future Fund Managing Partner Gary Black on Thursday said that EV maker Rivian Automotive stands the chance of being acquired by multiple names, including retail giant Amazon.com (AMZN) or ride-hailing platform Uber Technologies (UBER).</p><p>In a <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/garyblack00/status/2034688631869497364?s=20">post</a> on X, Black said that Rivian will ultimately be acquired by either German automaker Volkswagen, one of the "big three” U.S. automakers, or even Alphabet or Amazon.</p><p>“This is not the only reason to own Rivian,” Black said. These companies might buy out Rivian to expand their presence in both electric vehicles and full vehicle autonomy, the fund manager said, while also highlighting that Rivian’s market cap is still under $20 billion and the company has a “huge” potential to expand its total addressable market with its upcoming R2 midsize SUV.</p><p>“...the incremental TAM potential associated with extending the brand into the $50K R2 segment from the $80K R1 segment is HUGE,” Black said.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Rivian’s Investors</h2><p>Black’s comments come on the heels of the company announcing a partnership with Uber Technologies earlier on Thursday, under which it expects to deploy up to 50,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis on the Uber ride-hailing platform, starting with San Francisco and Miami in 2028.</p><p>Rivian also said that it will expand its robotaxis to 25 cities by 2031, with the help of up to $1.25 billion investment from Uber towards building a robotaxi fleet.</p><p>Retailer Amazon has also invested in Rivian, and owns nearly 12.8% of the company in addition to a commitment to purchase many of the company’s electric vans to add to its delivery fleet.</p><p>Volkswagen, meanwhile, has a joint venture with Rivian focused on developing next-gen zonal electronic architecture and software-defined vehicle (SDV) technology with the help of up to $5.8 billion in investment from the German automaker.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Rivian R2</h2><p>Rivian is currently gearing up to start production of its R2 midsize SUV, the base variant of which will have a sticker price of around $45,000, at its plant in Illinois. &nbsp;</p><p>Rivian’s current R1 offerings—the R1T truck and the R1S SUV—are both priced above $70,000 making them higher-end offerings. Chinese EV makers relying on budget electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are taking the biggest hits from the policy change, it added.</p><p>Chinese EV giant BYD held just 7.1% market share in the two months, putting it in the fourth position, as per the report. BYD previously overtook Volkswagen as the largest carmaker in China by sales in 2024, retaining the title in 2025 as well.</p><p>However, Volkswagen has begun production of its first model with Chinese EV maker XPeng. The automaker is looking to launch more than 20 new EV models in China this year, as per Reuters.</p><h2 class="st-heading-2">Investor Take On BYD</h2><p>Despite the sales slump, Michael Burry, the investor famous for predicting the U.S. housing crash and profiled in Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short,” <a href="https://stocktwits.com/news-articles/markets/equity/byd-haidilao-pdd-michael-burry-chinese-stocks-earnings/cZdMrucRIBM">called</a> BYD one of the world’s most technologically advanced automakers because of its vertically integrated model. BYD manufactures its own chips, batteries, motors and other components. A key advantage is BYD’s Blade battery, which uses lithium iron phosphate, Burry said earlier this week.
