Gold futures for February 2026 rose 2.2% to $4,599.40 an ounce, and March 2026 silver futures surged 6.1% to $84.17.<h2 class="st-heading-2">What’s Driving The Gold, Silver Rally?</h2>Precious metals hit fresh record highs early Monday as the Trump administration escalated its confrontation with the Federal Reserve by issuing DOJ subpoenas, raising concerns over central bank independence, inflation, and the safety of U.S. bonds, commodities expert and Head of Commodity Strategy for Saxo Bank, Ole Hansen wrote in a <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/Ole_S_Hansen/status/2010609307092390053">post</a> on X on Monday.“Safe-haven demand has been underpinned by escalating unrest in Iran, where ongoing protests continue to challenge the regime and stoke geopolitical risk premia,” he added.The Donald Trump-led administration is reportedly weighing criminal charges against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell tied to his testimony before Congress last summer regarding a Fed construction project, a move Powell has described as an attempt to exert greater political control over the central bank and its policy decisions.Meanwhile, demonstrations across Iran escalated over the weekend as President Trump said the U.S. could engage directly with Iranian officials while considering a range of forceful responses, including military action, to Tehran’s violent suppression of protests.Trump warned Iran’s leadership that any move by security forces to fire on demonstrators would trigger a U.S. attack. The probability for a 25 bps cut in March remains relatively high, at 42.5%, compared to 39.6% a month ago.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Outlook For 2026</h2>Analysts at ING Think stated in a recent note that gold’s main drivers are still in place. This includes central bank buying, Fed rate cuts, a weaker dollar, concerns about the Fed’s independence, and ETF buying.“President Trump also recently said he has decided on his pick for the next Fed chair, a candidate that the market expects will push for lower interest rates. All of these factors will benefit gold. We see gold prices hitting more record highs in 2026,” the firm stated.According to a CNBC&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/26/silver-tops-75-as-gold-and-platinum-surge-to-records.html">report</a>, Kelvin Wong, OANDA’s senior market analyst, is more optimistic. But you can’t invest in it analytically on the basis of something called intrinsic value,” Marks said.So far in 2025, the&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/SPX">S&amp;P 500</a> has gained 16%, while spot gold prices have risen 65%.&nbsp;<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin prices</a> have declined by over 7% year-to-date.Analysts at ING Think expect gold prices to reach $4,400 per troy ounce by the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2026, implying an upside of 2% from the current price of $4,295.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Intrinsic Value</h2>The Oaktree co-founder, also known for his investment memos, voiced his opposition to Bitcoin, diamonds, and paintings, apart from gold, for lacking intrinsic value.“If I say to a gold fan or a Bitcoin fan, well, what do you think the price will be in a year, how do they reach that conclusion? What do they base it on, if they don’t have cash flow to base that conclusion on?” Marks asked.Intrinsic value is the true underlying worth of an asset based on fundamentals like cash flow, assets, and earnings, independent of its current market price.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Gold Versus Equities</h2>While Marks acknowledged that those who invested in gold this year have made a “ton of money,” he pulled up historical returns of the yellow metal and compared it with the annual returns of U.S. equities.“If you bought gold at the end of 2010, I think you’ve had a 7.7% annual return since then.
