The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. He added that, for those reasons, central banks aren’t likely to purchase Bitcoin. The billionaire also noted that there is a technological risk facing Bitcoin with developments in quantum computing that could be a threat.&nbsp;In terms of holding Bitcoin in one’s portfolio, Dalio said that exposure depends on what other assets an investor is holding. “It tends to have a pretty high correlation with the tech stocks. In 2025, the company reported producing 5.89 million ounces of gold.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Production Issues At Newmont</h2>Chief Operating Officer Natascha Viljoen said the outlook for 2026 reflects year-on-year changes driven by planned mine sequencing at Ahafo South, Peñasquito, and Cadia, as well as the production impact from the Boddington bushfires in December.“We are pleased to report that the recovery following the fires is going well, and our team has successfully repaired the critical water supply infrastructure, and processing operations have now restarted at full levels,” she said, adding that the guidance also incorporated lower-than-expected ounces from Nevada Gold Mines and Pueblo Viejo, as indicated by the managing partner.&nbsp;Viljoen said that 2026 represents a trough in the company’s production cycle due to planned mine sequencing across several operations, as it positions the portfolio to return to production growth in 2027 and beyond, maintaining a longer-term outlook of nearly six million ounces of gold and 150,000 tonnes of copper annually.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Newmont Earnings Snapshot</h2>The company expects to invest about $1.4 billion in 2026 as it pushes ahead with major projects in execution, continues feasibility study work at Red Chris, and progresses mine life extensions at Lihir and Cerro Negro. “We expect 55% of total spend to be weighted to the second half of the year, primarily due to the start of the work on the Lihir nearshore barrier,” Viljoen added.Newmont said that the average realized gold price for the fourth quarter was $4,216, and attributable gold production in the quarter fell nearly 24% to 1.45 million ounces. Among Dalio’s concerns is the Trump administration’s recent push to bring Greenland, a Danish territory, under U.S. control for its “national security” needs.“We are on the brink. That means not in, but it means we are quite close to [capital war], and it would be very easy to go over the brink into a capital war, because there are mutual fears,” he said, according to the report.He added that capital controls are taking place all over the world right now, which is historically a trait he has observed in capital wars.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Mistake People Make With Gold</h2>Dalio also pointed to concerns among people about gold’s trajectory amid near- to mid-term price movements in the yellow metal.“Gold is up about 65% from a year ago, and down about 16% from its high, and I think people make the mistake of thinking, is it going to go up and down, and should I buy it?” he said, according to the report.While silver prices soared nearly 67% since the beginning of 2026, a recent sell-off has brought those gains to nearly 21% year to date. Gold prices rose nearly 29% during this period, before giving up some of the gains to hover 14% higher YTD.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Where Are Gold And Silver Headed To?</h2>After recent volatility in gold and silver prices, analysts at ING Think noted that the price trajectory of the two metals will depend on how Chinese investors respond to last week’s decline.“Price direction in the near term will hinge on the extent of dip‑buying from Chinese investors following Friday’s retreat. Ray Dalio Reportedly Backs Gold As A Hedge Against Capital Wars: 'When The Bad Times Come Along, It Does Uniquely Well'

During an interview with CNBC, Dalio pointed to gold’s utility as a store of value, while adding that both gold and silver are showing signs of recovery after the recent sell-off.

From crypto to central banks all have been hoarding gold in the light of macroeconomic uncertainties.&nbsp;Donald Trump has added to that pressure and increased the fears of another war after he pressed Iran to negotiate a nuclear deal, who has threatened to retaliate against the U.S. and Israel.&nbsp;On Wednesday, Tether CEO told Reuters that the company plans to allocate 10%-15% of its investment portfolio to physical gold. Several major central banks have already been hoarding more physical gold.&nbsp;"For our own portfolio, it's reasonable that we are going to have around 10% in bitcoin and 10% to 15% in gold," Ardoino said, according to a Reuters report. &nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Fed Leaves Rate Unchanged</h2>The U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday held its benchmark interest rates steady at 3.50% - 3.75% in its first policy meeting of 2026, on the back of encouraging labor market data and stabilizing unemployment rate.The move was widely anticipated by the markets after policymakers delivered three consecutive 25-bps rate cuts in September, October, and December 2025 amid rising inflation and growing unemployment at the time.
