$IBKR I’m streaming tonight while working on a Python trading system I’m building through the Interactive Brokers API. It’s not an automated signal bot — it’s more of a discretionary trade/risk/account manager built around how I actually trade. $IBKR not too hyped on them anymore. At one time I had 400 shares. Now I have 100. Been selling over this downward cycle. Time will tell if I rebuy.

$IBKR Interactive Brokers is run like a piece of infrastructure, not a consumer app — and its financials show it. Operating margin has held around 70-79% for years, versus roughly 40-50% at Robinhood and Schwab. That efficiency traces straight back to founder Thomas Peterffy, a self-taught programmer who built Wall Street's first handheld trading computer back in the 1980s and had trading fully automated by 1987. The company's instinct has always been: let software do it, spend as little as possible on everything else. The trade-off is real, though. IBKR didn't ship a beginner-friendly mobile app until 2022, and it barely markets itself — part of why it's still absent from the top 10 investing-app download charts, years after Robinhood's retail wave took off.

$IBKR Most zero-fee brokers make money by routing your order to a market maker (PFOF) instead of an exchange — and that market maker's quote often carries a hidden markup, especially on less liquid stocks. That spread cost doesn't show up as a fee line, but it's still coming out of your pocket. IBKR does the opposite: it kept commissions, but publishes its actual all-in trading cost every month — currently running about 2-4bps of trade value. That's a number you can actually compare. Independent research on retail execution costs puts typical PFOF-based spread costs well above that range.
