<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>The US Department of Justice opened a claims process on Monday, allowing victims of the $4 billion OneCoin Ponzi scheme to seek compensation from recovered funds.</li><li>OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova promoted the token as a “Bitcoin killer” before disappearing in 2017.</li><li>U.S. authorities have secured convictions against key figures, including the co-founder and former legal head, with 20 and 4-year prison sentences, respectively.</li></ul>The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Monday the launch of a remission process allowing victims of the OneCoin scam to apply for compensation from forfeited assets, in a case tied to ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova.The funds are derived from criminal forfeiture actions related to federal prosecutions in the Southern District of New York. Authorities say the OneCoin Ponzi scheme duped investors of more than $4 billion worldwide, involving victims in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and China. A part of the seized money, which presently exceeds $40 million, will be made available to qualified claimants who file applications by June 30.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Rise Of The ‘Cryptoqueen’ And OneCoin’s Collapse</h2>According to a 2019 BBC&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/stories-50435014">report</a>, Ignatova branded herself the “Cryptoqueen” and launched OneCoin in 2014. She promoted it as a direct rival to Bitcoin (BTC), which sparked a frenzy in the market at the time.&nbsp;The report explained that she described the token as a “Bitcoin killer,” claiming it would become the world’s leading cryptocurrency, beating Bitcoin, which was valued at over $500 per coin at the time. However, investigators later found that OneCoin had no underlying blockchain and operated entirely as a global Ponzi scheme. Docuseries “Fugitive: The Mystery of the Cryptoqueen,” was also created on Ignatova.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin’s (BTC) price</a> was trading at $75,631 on Tuesday morning, gaining over 5% over the past 24 hours. On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around BTC moved to 'bullish' from the ‘neutral’ zone, while chatter stayed at ‘high’ levels over the past day.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Charges, Disappearance, And Ongoing Manhunt</h2>US prosecutors&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/topten/ruja-ignatova/@@download.pdf">charged</a> Ignatova in October 2017 with wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. Ignatova, who had worked as a consultant at an MBB firm before founding OneCoin, disappeared only 2 weeks later. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) placed her on its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list, while offering a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://2021-2025.state.gov/reward-for-information-german-national-ruja-ignatova/">reward</a> of up to $5 million for any information on her.The DOJ said on Monday that victims who purchased OneCoin during the scheme’s operation between 2014 and 2019 could now file claims as part of the remission process.OneCoin co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/co-founder-multi-billion-dollar-cryptocurrency-pyramid-scheme-onecoin-pleads-guilty">pleaded guilty</a> in December 2022 and was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay $300 million in penalties. Additionally, OneCoin’s former head of legal and compliance, Irina Dilkinska, was also&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/head-legal-and-compliance-multibillion-dollar-cryptocurrency-pyramid-scheme-onecoin-0#:~:text=Damian%20Williams%2C%20the%20United%20States,the%20massive%20OneCoin%20fraud%20scheme.">sentenced</a> to four years in prison in April 2024 and ordered to forfeit $111.44 million after pleading guilty to related charges. However, ‘Cryptoqueen’ Ruja Ignatova is yet to be found.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">One Of The Largest Crypto Fraud Cases</h2>The OneCoin case remains one of the “largest global fraud schemes” linked to cryptocurrency. Similar cases emerged in recent years, including&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/bitconnect-founder-indicted-global-24-billion-cryptocurrency-scheme">BitConnect</a>, a crypto lending platform that collapsed in 2018 and was later found to have operated as a Ponzi scheme. The most serious claim by Craig Wright, an Australian computer scientist, was by courts and researchers.Those suspected of being Satoshi, other than Back, include Hal Finney, an early crypto pioneer and one of the first Bitcoin developers. Adam Back Denies He’s Satoshi Nakamoto, Says It’s ‘Coincidence And Similar Phrases’

Cryptographer Adam Back denied being Bitcoin’s mysterious creator in response to a New York Times report that linked him to the identity through linguistic analysis.

Carreyrou cited evidence, including technical history, timing, and personal connections. According to him, the one thing that&nbsp;stood out is a forensic analysis of Satoshi's writing style.<a href="https://stocktwits.com/coins/bitcoin">Bitcoin’s price</a>&nbsp;was up over 3% over the past 24 hours, back above the $71,000 level early Wednesday.&nbsp;On Stocktwits, retail sentiment around BTC moved to ‘neutral’ from the ‘bearish’ zone, while chatter remained at ‘normal’ levels over the past day.Nakamoto&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://intel.arkm.com/explorer/entity/satoshi-nakamoto">collectively</a> holds about $79 billion of the crypto, still untouched at that price. Carreyrou said that Back is one of the few people who had both the skills and the ideas for Bitcoin. He came up with Hashcash, the proof-of-work system mentioned in the white paper, and he wrote down important parts of a decentralized digital currency years before Bitcoin came out.&nbsp;Back has publicly and repeatedly denied being Satoshi. In 2024, when a documentary called "Money Electric: The Bitcoin Story" stated Back as Nakamoto, he denied claims saying, “I'm not. But also the documentary will presumably be wrong, as no one knows who Satoshi is.<h2 class="st-heading-2">The Linguistic Fingerprint</h2>Carreyrou also&nbsp;discussed linguistic evidence, pointing out strange features in Satoshi's writing that closely resemble Back's. Some of these are British and American spellings, unique phrases like "burning the money" and "partial pre-image," strange and inconsistent hyphenation like "proof-of-work," and small style mistakes like ending sentences with "also," using "it's" and "its" wrong, and putting two spaces between sentences.&nbsp;By stacking these markers, which forensic linguists call sociolinguistic fingerprints, Carreyrou&nbsp;explained how he was able to narrow down thousands of possible authors to one match.He also said that if Back were Satoshi, there would be strong reasons for him to never reveal it. Anonymity would protect him from legal and regulatory risks that come with making a system that challenges state control over money, keep him from becoming a central target like the founders of Napster, protect him from the personal security risks of controlling a huge Bitcoin fortune, and stop investigators from "triangulating" his identity through his past work and connections.<h2 class="st-heading-2">McAfee’s ‘Lingo’ Theory Resurfaces</h2>This way of looking at language isn't new, though. In 2018, cybersecurity pioneer John McAfee said he had found Satoshi using similar methods, examining the "lingo," phrasing patterns, and stylistic fingerprints hidden in Satoshi's emails and forum posts. It accuses Jane Street of insider activity, which helped trigger the 2022 breakdown of TerraUSD and LUNA.&nbsp;Following the lawsuit, many in the crypto community took a closer look at Jane Street's trades. According to crypto analyst Justin Bechler, Bitcoin had shown repeated sharp sell-offs around 10 a.m. ET, when the stock market opens. K33 Research analyst Vetle Lunde&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/VetleLunde/status/2027009407544881512">said</a> he examined minute-by-minute Bitcoin price data and did not find a consistent daily price drop at 10 a.m. as the theory claims. As Bitcoin struggled to gain momentum over the past week, some analysts flagged a potential drop to $10,000, while others maintained that the current weakness reflected short-term liquidations. 

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>Bitcoin whales and sharks suffered losses of almost $30.9 billion in the first quarter of 2026.</li><li>Santiment data reveal consistent negative realized profit/loss and increased whale transaction activity.</li><li>Declining or static whale supply indicates dispersion rather than accumulation, a trend often linked with late-stage market collapse.</li></ul>On-chain data show that whales and sharks have been selling coins at a loss since the first quarter of the year, with the biggest holders of Bitcoin (BTC) clearly stressed.&nbsp; The Coin Bureau&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/coinbureau/status/2040376330819117502?s=20">pointed</a> out on Saturday that Bitcoin whales and sharks lost more than $30.9 billion in the first quarter, or about $337 million per day.
