Canada approved the C$10 billion ($7.3 billion) Ksi Lisims project, off the coast of British Columbia, to start exporting liquefied natural gas, amid a renewed focus on fossil fuels by the administration of Prime Minister Mark Carney.The floating LNG export facility, owned by Western LNG, a Blackstone-backed company, as well as Rockies LNG Partners and the indigenous group Nisga’a Nation, is expected to begin operations by late 2028 or early 2029. The approval marked the first major federal project approval under Canada's new government.The project is expected to have an exporting capacity of 12 million tons per year, which will make it the second biggest LNG export project facility in the country after Shell-backed LNG Canada, which started exports earlier this year.“This summer, I heard from leaders across business and government that the world is looking to Canada for secure, reliable, clean energy. Canada's Ssense, a leading e-commerce platform for luxury fashion clothing and accessories, announced on Thursday that it has filed for bankruptcy&nbsp;protection due to business disruptions caused by U.S. tariffs, according to a report in the fashion news site Vogue.Canada faces a 35% tariff on goods shipped into the U. S., with some exemptions. And now, with the de minimis exemption on low-value Canadian goods set to expire, retailers, in particular, are facing steep costs for importing to the U.S.The development is the latest indication of how U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs are disrupting businesses globally, particularly the small ones operating in niche categories.Italian retailer Luisaviaroma filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, citing macroeconomic headwinds, including the luxury slowdown, U.S. tariffs, and increasing transportation costs, as well as missteps in its own strategy.Ssense attributed the bankruptcy filing directly to higher costs incurred due to the U.S. tariff policy; however, Ssense's primary lender placed the company under Canada's Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) protection, triggering a sales process "without our consent", according to a Ssense spokesperson."We are deeply disappointed in this decision, which we believe does not serve the long-term interests of our 1,000+ employees, vendors, and partners," the spokesperson&nbsp;<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.voguebusiness.com/story/companies/ssense-files-for-bankruptcy-protection-under-weight-of-tariffs">told</a> Vogue."We will be filing our own CCAA application to safeguard the company, retain control of our assets and operations, and fight for the future of this business."Ssense laid off 8% of its workforce, or about 100 employees, in May.If Ssense were to fail, it would be another blow to fashion's independent designer brands, many of whom rely on Ssense as a retail partner, according to Vogue.Founded in 2003, Ssense curates high-end designer clothing, streetwear, and accessories, and blends retail with editorial content. Canadian E-Tailer Ssense, Under Trump Tariff Strain, Files For Bankruptcy

The development is the latest indication of how U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs are disrupting businesses globally, particularly the small ones operating in niche categories.

Canada is looking to collaborate more closely with Mexico over a range of issues, including security and trade, its senior ministers said on Tuesday, following a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum.According to a Bloomberg <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-06/canada-and-mexico-to-cooperate-as-free-traders-facing-us-tariffs">report</a>, citing Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, the two countries agreed to “build a work plan” covering “resilient supply chains, port-to-port lines of trade, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, energy security.” &nbsp;The meeting between Anand, the Canadian finance minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, and Sheinbaum reportedly lasted over an hour. The two ministers are also expected to meet business leaders while in Mexico.According to the report, Anand noted that Mexico plays a critical role in the global economy, and Canada recognizes this and wants to leverage it to the advantage of the Canadian domestic economy. While Champagne reportedly said that Canada offers “a lot of opportunities to Mexico when it comes to critical minerals and the supply chain around that,” and energy security, before adding that both nations are “free traders.”The neighbors are seeking closer ties at a time when their relationship with the U.S. has soured due to President Donald Trump’s tariff salvo.  Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne reportedly said that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) is an “essential element of competitiveness in North America.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa was disappointed over U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest move to raise tariffs on Canadian goods to 35% from 25%, but would carry on trade negotiations with its southern neighbor.The new tariffs were imposed by Trump in an executive order on Thursday, which said that Canada “failed to cooperate” with the U.S. to curb the flow of illicit drugs like fentanyl. However, the tariffs do not apply to goods compliant with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.In a statement <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://x.com/MarkJCarney/status/1951136566509801740">posted</a> on X, Carney said that while the Canadian government is disappointed by the tariff move, it will remain committed to the USMCA. He added that his government will work to protect jobs and invest in “industry competitiveness” for sectors such as autos, lumber, and steel, which will be the most affected by the tariffs. Canada became the latest nation to receive a letter from President Donald Trump over the fate of tariffs if a bilateral deal isn’t struck by the Aug. 1 deadline.The screenshot of the letter shared by the president on his Truth Social account warned that a 35% levy will be imposed on Canadian products&nbsp;entering U.S. shores. Canada currently enjoys tariff exemption for goods traded under the USMCA, which came into effect on July 1, 2020.
