Toyota is relying on local tech partners, Xpeng is introducing new hybrid-range models, and Nio is drawing attention to its flagship SUV launch.

Rivian Automotive CEO RJ Scaringe&nbsp;believes the EV maker’s $5.8 billion technology alliance with Volkswagen Group will underpin the German automaker’s planned ID.1, a $20,000 EV he called Europe’s “answer to China.”&nbsp;Speaking at&nbsp;Morgan Stanley’s 13th Annual Laguna Conference on Thursday evening, Scaringe said the launch would draw close attention from competitors.“Every car company will buy it. BYD will buy it. Xiaomi will buy it and XPeng will buy it,” he said. He added that they would be “impressed” by the vehicle’s network architecture, ECU layout and electrical systems, which were designed to scale from VW’s entry-level models to Porsche and Audi flagships.R2 Autonomy&nbsp;To Leap Beyond HighwaysScaringe also spotlighted Rivian’s own product pipeline, led by the $45,000 R2 five-passenger SUV. While Rivian already offers hands-free driving on highways, he said the next step is “hands-free everywhere,” followed by “eyes-off” operation and eventually turn-by-turn autonomy.&nbsp;He said that&nbsp;the shift represents “something like a 50x increase in the number of roads that the vehicle is going to be able to drive on, driving itself.”The company plans to hold an event at the end of the year to showcase its autonomy technology, including hardware details, its compute and perception stack, and demonstrations of the system in operation.Scaringe forecast that hands-free driving on all roads will expand next year, with “eyes-off” autonomy targeted for 2027–2028. He said that if executed well, the feature could “unlock massive pools of demand” and significantly expand Rivian’s customer base.Data Flywheel Powers Rivian’s AI TrainingRivian’s Gen2 system marks a clean break from the Mobileye-based setup in its first vehicles. Scaringe said Rivian brought its compute, sensors and perception fully in-house, enabling the company to build a “data flywheel” to train its autonomy system using real-world driving data collected from its fleet.He said Rivian’s smaller vehicle base compared with Tesla’s is offset by advanced camera and radar systems, particularly 3D imaging radar, which helps improve training in difficult conditions like rain or fog.Not Enough EV Choices Under $50KScaringe&nbsp;reiterated that EV adoption in the U.S. remains stuck at around 8% because of limited options for mainstream buyers. “The number of great choices [under $50,000] is well under the number of fingers on my hand,” he said, pointing to Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y as the only broadly compelling choices today. XPeng To Launch Mona Brand Globally Next Year: Report

According to a CNBC report, the company is now open to acquiring other electric carmakers. 

Retail chatter picked up around VinFast Auto late Sunday after the Vietnamese carmaker rolled out its first electric SUVs in India, unveiling the compact VF6 and the larger VF7, in a market that’s fast becoming a global EV hotspot.Prices start at ₹16.49 lakh ($19,800) for the VF6 and ₹20.89 lakh ($25,000) for the VF7, with customers able to reserve one for a refundable ₹21,000. Deliveries are expected later this year.&nbsp;Both models come with complimentary charging and maintenance until 2028 and feature panoramic sunroofs as standard.&nbsp;The SUVs&nbsp;come with warranties of seven years for the VF6 and 10 years for the VF7, offering ranges of up to 532 km (ARAI-certified) and features including vegan leather interiors, 12.9-inch displays, ADAS Level 2, and modes such as Pet Mode and Camp Mode.Local assembly will take place at VinFast’s planned Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu, which will also serve as an export hub for South Asia. The company has lined up 13 dealer partners to establish 32 outlets across 27 cities, supported by service and charging tie-ups with RoadGrid, myTVS, Global Assure, and BatX Energies.VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau said the launch represented “cars made by Indians, for Indians,” reflecting the company’s focus on combining global expertise with local manufacturing.VinFast’s India debut comes as Asian automakers expand across the region amid rising trade barriers in the U.S. The International Energy Agency estimates Chinese automakers accounted for more than 70% of global EV production in 2024, with BYD leading the push.BYD began production at its first Southeast Asian plant in Thailand in July 2024 and announced a CKD assembly plant in Malaysia in August, due to start in 2026. The company is also planning facilities in Cambodia and Indonesia and already controls nearly half of Southeast Asia’s EV market.&nbsp;XPeng launched localized production in Indonesia in July, delivering its first right-hand drive X9 MPV assembled from CKD kits at the Gaikindo auto show, and plans to expand its sales and service network to cover most major Indonesian cities by year-end.Nio said in August that it will expand into Singapore, Uzbekistan, and Costa Rica over the 2025–26 period. In August, Fang Cheng Bao sold 16,265 vehicles, a 233.6% increase year-on-year.
