L’Oréal became France’s most valuable listed company on Tuesday, overtaking luxury giant LVMH as the luxury sector continues to face persistent pressure from years of slower sales and weaker earnings. L’Oréal’s market capitalization reached €203.17 billion ($234.54 billion), edging above LVMH’s €202.05 billion, according to LSEG data.
The milestone marks the first time since 2017 that a company outside the luxury sector has held the top position on the Paris stock market at the close of trading. LVMH, owner of Louis Vuitton and one of the world’s largest luxury groups, had maintained its position as France’s most valuable listed company for years.
The change in rankings underscores the contrasting performance of the two sectors. While luxury companies have struggled with weaker consumer demand and a prolonged slowdown in key markets, particularly among high-end shoppers.
