Smart contracts are self-executing programs written in Solidity that automatically carry out agreements when conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries like banks or brokers.   Validators stake ETH as collateral to propose and validate blocks, earning rewards for honest participation while facing penalties for malicious behavior. The EIP-1559 upgrade introduced a dynamic base fee mechanism that burns ETH with each transaction, creating deflationary pressure during high network activity when more ETH is burned than issued to validators.  Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in 2013, but seven co-founders helped build it, including Gavin Wood who created Solidity and the EVM technical specification, and Joseph Lubin who founded ConsenSys. The project launched in July 2015 after raising over $18 million through crowdfunding, quickly becoming the largest blockchain developer community. Major milestones include the 2020 Beacon Chain launch, the 2021 London hard fork implementing fee burning, and the 2022 Merge to Proof of Stake.   Ether (ETH) serves multiple functions: paying transaction fees (gas), staking to secure the network and earn 3-5% annual yields, serving as collateral in DeFi protocols, and purchasing NFTs and digital assets. Transactions are grouped into blocks added approximately every 10 minutes through mining, where specialized computers compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles.   Bitcoin has achieved mainstream adoption through multiple vectors. The January 2024 SEC approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs opened Bitcoin investment to traditional finance participants, and corporations like Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) are using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset to protect against currency debasement, offering MSTR holders amplified exposure to Bitcoin.   The Bitcoin ecosystem continues to evolve with innovations like Ordinals, which emerged in January 2023 to enable NFT-like functionality directly on Bitcoin, and BRC-20 tokens, an experimental standard for creating fungible tokens using Ordinal inscriptions. BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) represents emerging financial applications extending beyond Bitcoin's traditional role, with protocols like Babylon allowing Bitcoin holders to stake BTC to secure Proof of Stake chains.

<ul class="summary-bullets"><li>The authorities reiterated that cryptocurrencies do not have the same legal status as fiat currency.</li><li>Regulators said speculative trading in cryptocurrencies and tokenized real-world assets has created new challenges for financial risk control.</li><li>At the time of writing, Bitcoin traded higher by about 8% at $67,801, after declining in seven of the previous eight sessions.</li></ul>China has reportedly intensified its crackdown on cryptocurrencies, prohibiting domestic companies from issuing digital tokens overseas without official approval.According to a&nbsp;<a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-02-06/china-bars-unapproved-issuance-of-yuan-linked-stablecoins-abroad">Bloomberg report</a> on Friday, citing a statement from The People’s Bank of China and seven other regulators, China has banned the offshore issuance of yuan-linked stablecoins unless authorized, warning that such activities could threaten the country’s monetary sovereignty.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Oversight To Protect National Security</h2>Regulators said speculative trading in cryptocurrencies and tokenized real-world assets has created new challenges for financial risk control.“Speculation involving cryptocurrencies and real-world asset tokenization has occurred from time to time amid multiple factors, presenting new challenges for risk prevention and control, and necessitating stronger regulation to safeguard national security and social stability,” the regulators reportedly said in the notice.The authorities reiterated that cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins, do not have the same legal status as fiat currency and that related business activities on the mainland are considered illegal financial operations.Officials cautioned that tokenization of real-world assets, along with associated intermediary and technology services, could amount to illegal fundraising unless explicitly approved within designated financial infrastructure.<h2 class="st-heading-2">Bitcoin’s Selloff</h2>The announcement comes amid an extended selloff in Bitcoin, with the cryptocurrency trading at levels last seen in October 2024. China Tightens Its Grip On Crypto, Bars Firms From Issuing Tokens Overseas Without Permit: Reports

Chinese officials have reportedly warned that tokenizing real-world assets and related services could constitute illegal fundraising.

President Trump’s regulators reportedly said they were ready to lay out rules that would help foster the crypto industry’s growth after legislation on the matter ran into an unexpected setback.“In the long term, it’s better to have legislation,” Securities and Exchange Chair Paul Atkins told The Wall Street Journal. He expects the legislation to pass this year, but added that “we can make do with our authority,” as per the <a class="st-link-external" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/currencies/trump-regulators-say-they-are-ready-to-lay-out-crypto-rules-to-foster-growth-9fab9d12?mod&amp;#61;Searchresults&amp;pos&amp;#61;1&amp;page&amp;#61;1">report</a>. &nbsp;Commodity Futures Trading Commission and SEC expect to sign a memorandum of understanding to formalize their cooperation.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Division Of Work</h2>SEC and CFTC plan to release new details on how they will collaborate on oversight of the cryptocurrency market, as per the report. The joint efforts down the line could include deciding which crypto assets fall under each other’s jurisdiction, an issue regulators have at times clashed over in the past.&nbsp;As per report, SEC may focus on building a regulatory framework around tokenized securities, while the CFTC focuses on digital assets that regulators view as akin to digital collectibles or commodities.&nbsp;“We need to work out a clear taxonomy and stick within our lanes when it comes to enforcement,” said Selig.&nbsp;<h2 class="st-heading-2">Markup Session&nbsp;</h2>The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee is scheduled to hold a markup session for the CLARITY Act on Thursday. The debate could advance commodities rules even if the Banking Committee side of things is stalled.Approval of the Agricultural Committee’s half of the crypto market structure bill could prove to be a catalyst for the market.
